Marco is currently serving as Head of Data Science and Data Engineering at Entrix, a German renewable energy startup, where he leads the development of optimization and Machine Learning algorithms for energy trading.
Marco holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence since 2007, with focus on Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. He initially worked at several research institutions, including The Information Science Institute of the University of Southern California and the Computational Linguistics Department of the University of Saarland Germany. He collaborated, among others, with the European Space Agency, the Italian Center of Research and several early-stage Silicon Valley start-ups. In 2008 he was awarded the Swiss Computer Science Challenge award.
In 2008 he moved to Silicon Valley where he started his career in the industry. He worked first at Yahoo! as a senior scientist, where he focused on large-scale text mining and knowledge extraction for search and social-media based initiatives.
He then moved to eBay as a principal scientist, were he served as technical lead of the Rapid Response team, tasked to improve customer satisfaction via acquiring customer service data and Machine Learning. Later, he served as senior member of the Search Science team in the area of search spam detection.
In 2016 Marco moved back to Europe, joining the Autonomous Driving department at BMW in Munich, Germany, where, among other positions, he managed the organization responsible for the end-to-end ingestion, management and servicing of Autonomous Driving data collected from the BMW development fleet and the BMW worldwide customer fleet.
After six years at BMW, he joined Meta as an individual contributor, where he contributed to research and production projects in the area of graph-based recommendation, Large Language Model fine tuning and embeddings semantic analysis.
Marco is author of more than 50 papers and patents. He chaired several workshops and conference tracks in area of social media and computational linguistics.
